A night guard, also known as a bite guard is a moulded piece of plastic that can either be made for your upper or lower teeth. Night guards prevents wear occurring to your teeth whilst you grind at night and can relieve symptoms from teeth grinding such as headaches and jaw pain.
How Do You Know If You Grind Your Teeth?
Your dentist can tell if you grind your teeth usually from the symptoms you tell them or they can tell by the visible signs of wear in your teeth. The night guard is often recommended to prevent any further wear from occurring and to also help alleviate the symptoms you have.
What Symptoms Should I Look Out For?
Grinding can lead to a variety of different symptoms, and can effect people differently. These symptoms can include (but are not limited to):
- Jaw ache
- Clicky jaw
- Pressure behind eyes
- Ear pain
- Limited jaw opening
- Upper back/neck pain
If you suffer from any of these symptoms and there are signs of tooth wear there is a good chance you may be grinding or clenching your teeth (and you may not even be aware this is happening!).
How Are Bite Guards Made?
Your dentist will take an impression of either your upper or lower teeth depending on your needs and then the lab will make a custom made mouth guard that’s fits your teeth.
It may take a few nights for you to get used to your night guard. If you don’t wear your night guard while you sleep, your symptoms can start to come back (and your teeth won’t be protected when you grind).
